I think it's only fair that I update my earlier review.
After complaining further I spoke one on one to Service management and they apologized that they could not fix it and for the fact that I got another repaired unit. They swapped it out for a brand new unit. Way to go Surefire :)

On the Right Track
I think "SureFire" is on the right track with this headlight. I've been using the "Maximus" every night for over a month. I work in the oil fields of North Dakota and I need a headlight that I can depend upon. So far, the "Maximus" has been durable, reliable, and has worked as advertised. I wear the headlight attached to my hard hat most of the time by using the included headband. The light output on maximum setting enables me to work as though I am in daylight. The ability to recharge the headlight is saving me from the expense and inconvenience of dealing with batteries. I can charge the light in any truck. I will be interested to see if this light will perform in below zero temperatures this winter. So far, so good.

For me it works best over a hat. It really needs a top strap. I also have the saint, which has the top strap. The shape of the saint fits my forehead better then the Maximus. But as far as brightness, there is no comparison. The Maximus is bright and easy to charge. Can charge it at home or in the truck on the way out to hunt. And most of all, no more batteries to buy or change. OK maybe once a year, we will have to wait and see how long the rechargeables will last. I would recommend this product.

Sent back for repair.... discharging
I sent this 8 month old 'as new' unit back for repair in July...so still in warranty. The battery was not holding a charge. The battery was replaced although I saw no evidence when I used it again because giving a full charge as recommended (unplugged as soon as charged), would not last for more than one week. I tested it for 30 seconds each day....5 seconds on high power and 25 seconds on lowest power. So I send it back again, granted this time on Surefires tab, but only to be replaced with an older and different serial number unit which had obviously seen more wear and tear. I am contacting them again for my properly repaired original unit or a new replacement.
When the unit worked, it worked very well but I do not think I should be the victim of unethical repair practices just because somebody cannot repair an original unit properly in the first place. Jeez, at least give me my nice new unscratched casing back! I have three other Surefire products which I am very happy with, including the new UBR Invictus, but if I do not get this resolved, there will be no more Surefires coming into this house.

Good start... but needs improvement
The brightness and variable output is extremely good and easy to use. The form factor could be better. Very heavy - I added a strap across the top scavenged from another headlamp to stabilize, which helped a lot. I would prefer a lighter high strength plastic housing - like some of the Surefire (nylon or polypropylene) flashlights. The small protective cap over the charging port is too flimsy and easily knocked out. Finally, I would make the battery pack flatter and wider so it rests against the head or helmet rather than the current design that sticks out and easily hits things. Battery life is excellent though. Comes with car and AC chargers, which is good but expected for the high price.

On the day you're born, you should purchase a Maximus headlamp and never buy another flashlight. The market is flooded by Chinese products, which are designed to fail prematurely; the Maximus is designed to perform and last...

This light is FANTASTIC! I use it to work hands free in Fire Truck Pump housing compartments, and other enclosed areas. It spreads the light out and makes it easy to see the whole area. Well built, and designed. Best light I ever bought. Looking into future to purchase more Surefire products. Thank you.

Overall satisfied but could use a little refinement
First of all, I was so excited to receive this as a present from my brother in law. I live in an area where there are no street lights and often go on walks or ride my bike a night. This light is brilliant for creating a wide area for you to work in. This does no have the long distance lighting that my $14 CREE 1600 lumens headlight has but I haven't really tested both for qualify of build, durability, battery life etc.
Overall this light feels extremely well built but is to heavy to use on your forehead unless you really tighten up the strap. Surefire needs to have a top strap that keeps the light from falling down. I often find myself using it as a necklace similar to the previous viewer.
I imagine this would be the perfect camping accessory or for the individual that needs to work and have lighting. The nicest features of this light is the adjustable switch that allows you to have 1 lumen all the way to 500. At its brightest setting this is extremely bright and the quality is confidence inspiring.
I wish Surefire could come up with a free and easy bike attachment so that you could use it on both applications.
Overall I think this is a great quality product that with a simple top strap would make it extremely effective. (or maybe my forehead needs to be adjusted)
Thanks again for the good product.

Handy and Versatile Product
This is one of those products whose designers thought it all out before thinking, "We should have thought of that." First the light output is variable. This is a very handy feature on any flashlight. You don't always need or want 100% capacity. Second, it is rechargable. This is a great feature for those of us who don't want to have to keep an inventory of batteries. Third the light head is adjustable for varying needs. Four the light is comfortable to wear and not too heavy. It all adds up to a very useful light and therefore I do use it as often as I need a light and need both hands available.
