- Nearly perfect EDC light
I bought my EB2 as soon as they were available. I had been carrying an EB1 for a while but I wanted more light. The EB2 is an incredible light. I carry it every where every day clipped inside my pocket. The high output is painfully bright to an attacker and the size and shape of the light are perfect to use as an improvised Kubaton type defensive tool should the need arise.
I used it to shoo away a very aggressive panhandler in the Buckhead district of Atlanta a few days after receiving the light. The bum was about two feet away and jumped back and acted like he'd been stunned when the 500 lumens hit him in the face. He tripped and fell off the sidewalk and scuttled away.
There are two small but annoying issues I have with the EB2. First is the pocket clip design is fundamentally flawed. The clip is stamped spring steel that fits into a dovetail on the aluminum body of the EB2. Right at the dovetail part of the clip is a scalloped cut. It creates stress risers in the metal clip which will always eventually crack and fail with use. I've gone through 3 clips and I'm about to order a 4th. They seem to last about 3-4 months tops for me. The EB1 clip is a different design and doesn't have this problem. I love the way the EB2 clip works and clips in my pocket but the dovetail interface needs to be redesigned and fixed. I don't want to lose a very expensive light and I don't want to have to fish around in my pocket fumbling for it if I need it to ward of an aggressive animal or human.
The second design issue is the unshrouded button on the EB2. The EB1 activation button is shrouded to prevent unintentional activation of the light. The EB2's button is not and the light is 150% brighter and hotter than it's diminutive little brother. I have had the EB2 get switched accidentally a few times while doing physically strenuous work. The first time I got into my car and drove for about 30 minutes before I realized that my leg was getting very hot. The light was on and I shut it off. When I got home at the end of the day I had what felt like a sunburned spot about 6 inches in diameter on my upper thigh for about two days.

This is my first SureFire product. I started carrying a backup flashlight in my pocket. I have had my main light fail, and a backup should be carried by all. This light is excellent in all aspects of what a backup flashlight should be. I have the tatictal switch version. I like that I can keep it from turning on by accident. Very impressed with this product.

I really like this flashlight. This is my 6th from Surefire since 1996. You guys have really outdone yourself's with this model. The EB2 Backup will be on my side, literally 24/7. I also think you guys did the tactical tailcap just right too. A Deliberate push all the way in, gives you the 500 lumens. Gingerly light push, gives you the map reading 5 lumen level. So under stress(tactical situation), when you push the tailcap all the way in, it's at it's brightest. It's a seamless act, from zero to 500. Good Job Surefire !

Very impressed with this one. This is my 4th or 5th surefire in the last 8 years. Its amazing how far LED's have advanced in the past 4 years. I agree with a previous reviewer that the low beam could be a bit brighter since most of the time I try to use that setting to conserve battery life. This is the first time I chose a tactical switch, and I think I am going to like it very much.
To make this the PERFECT Illumination Tool, make the low beam at 15 - 20 lumens, or better yet, make let it have 3 settings. (5-25-500) Also, since I carry this or my EB-1 Backup clipped in my pants pocket, my aging hands and skin would be very grateful if a clip sheath was included that could be slid over the clip when its not needed and then easily slid away or off when you need the clips functionality. It great to have a clip, however, that can be used in either direction.
Keep up the great work and designs, SUREFIRE.

- EB2 Backup - Nice Light But...
Overall, this unit is is quite similar to other SureFires of similar design; the LumaMax, the Outdoorsman, and others with the TIR lens etc and meets expectations of SureFire quality. The 500 lumen high output is nothing short of stunning. A tiny flashlight that lights up like a high beam car headlight. My complaint is the low level output is a little too low given the likelyhood of using that setting most of the time.
The other big disappointment is no lanyard included and there doesn't seem to be one made as an accessory. Perhaps it is because this flashlight is threaded at both ends of the barrel. The tailcap for on/off, and lamphouse for battery replacement doesn't allow for a rigid channel in which to place the lanyard slip ring.

The EB2 Backup is a slender, compact dual-output flashlight with a stunning 500-lumen maximum output that can be used as a primary or backup light for patrol officers or a duty light for plainclothes officers. It's also ideal for everyday-carry, self-defense, or outdoor applications. The EB2 features an ultra-high-output, virtually indestructible LED emitter and a precision Total Internal Reflection (TIR) lens that create a high-intensity beam optimized for both reach and situational awareness.
There are two EB2 Backup models to choose from, differing in the type of tailcap switching:
Click-type switch - Partially press tailcap pushbutton for momentary-on high output; press further to click constant-on high. Return to off and press or click again within two seconds for low output.
Tactical switch - Partially press tailcap pushbutton for momentary-on low output; press further for momentary-on high output. Release to turn light off. Twist tailcap clockwise for constant-on low and then high output.
The EB2's max-output 500-lumen beam is ideal for identifying potential threats and overwhelming their vision. Its five-lumen low-output setting is perfect for reading a map, checking an ID, or navigating in low light with minimal degradation of your dark-adapted vision. The EB2 Backup can run at this low-output level for 67 hours on a set of two 123A lithium batteries, a valuable feature for outdoor, emergency, or other uses where you may not have easy access to spare batteries.
A tough, lightweight Mil-Spec hard-anodized aluminum body protects the EB2's sophisticated electronics, and its smooth contours minimize clothing snag and pressure points. A two-way clip permits secure head-up or head-down carry, as well as field-expedient hands-free lighting if clipped to the bill or brim of a hat. Available with either of the above listed tailcap switches in Black or Desert Tan.
