Great Little Light, As Expected from Surefire..

I purchased this light to go with the Thyrm / Costa Switchback. I didn't realize that the click tail cap didn't work with the Switchback, so I returned the light. I ended up finding an EB2 with the tactical tail cap, on line. I gave the EB1 all 5 star marks above, because I have no problem at all with the light, it just didn't work for me, because of the click tail cap.

EB1 Performance

I have many Surefire flashlights and they just keep getting better. This is an excellent flashlight. I use it with the sheriff department as well as a first responder and fire fighter.

A great light with one big flaw

I've been waiting for this light—the upgraded, 300-lumen version of the venerable EB1—for several months. I finally took the plunge and am overall very impressed.

Fit and finish is fantastic: the anodization is even and seems durable, threads are smooth, and the switch has great tactile feedback.

Performance-wise, it's a monster. It can outshine some of my 2xCR123 lights. The TIR lens makes for a very "throwy" beam. It can hit things at a distance that'll surprise you, but up close, you'll notice the lack of spill in the beam. That's a pretty common thing with small (and particularly TIR) lights, so I was prepared for it, and given the crazy amount it can project, you might not miss it, particularly if you're using the light outdoors more than indoors. Low mode is fine for up-close work, but I find myself wishing it were something closer to 10 or 20 lumens, even at the cost of reduced runtime, as the brighter light would help in certain situations.

Only a few things give me pause with this light:

The clip design is really a weak spot in an otherwise great light. I somehow managed to bend the thing while it was clipped in my pocket (don't know if it got snagged on something or if the pocket fabric shifting managed to torque it). The two-way clip is a great idea, but clipping it lens-up means it juts way out of the pocket.

Second, I go back and forth on whether a shrouded switch would be better. Haven't had any accidental turn-ons in the pocket yet, so it probably comes down to personal preference. Again, the switch is fantastic.

Third: despite being a 1xCR123 light, it's not small. You'll appreciate that when it's in your hand, and probably appreciate it less when it's in your pocket.

Finally, there's no getting around it: this is an expensive light. You can make the argument that Surefire's quality, and the way they stand behind their products, justifies the cost. I'd be curious to see what a polymer Backup could do, not only in terms of performance and durability but also in terms of cost.

I've had a lot of EDC gear come and go, but when I go out the door, a flashlight is always in my pocket. I get the feeling that the EB1 might be the last pocket light I need to buy.

The EB1 Backup — an upgraded version of the original E1B Backup — is an extremely compact yet powerful dual-output flashlight that can be used as a backup light for patrol officers or a duty light for plainclothes officers. It's also ideal for outdoor, self-defense, and everyday-carry applications. The Backup features a virtually indestructible LED emitter and a precision Total Internal Reflection (TIR) lens that create a far-reaching focused beam optimized for situational awareness.

Click-type switch — Partially press tailcap pushbutton for momentary-on high output; press further to click constant-on high. Return to off and press or click again within two seconds for low output.

The brilliant 300-lumen high output beam is ideal for identifying threats and overwhelming the sight of adversaries. The 5-lumen low output is perfect for reading a map, checking an ID, or navigating in low light with minimal degradation to your dark-adapted vision. The Backup can run at this level for 40 hours, a valuable feature for outdoor or emergency situations. A tough, lightweight Mil-Spec hard-anodized aluminum body protects the EB1 Backup’s sophisticated electronics, and its smooth contours minimize clothing snag and pressure points. A two-way clip allows head-up or head-down carry.
  • Virtually indestructible LED emitter regulated to maximize output and runtime
