I've been in the special operations community for almost a decade and whether it's Afghanistan Asia or Africa, this flash light has not only been in my pocket but has been a great tool for checking my corners. This light is bright enough to where shining it in someones face at night will usually confuse or dissuade them from pursuing a more aggressive course of action. It's reliable and tough, I did put a few small strips of skateboard grip tape along the main tube just because the black finish tends to get a little slick when you're sweaty or wet. I also have the tan shrouded click switch model which is the best one in my opinion, the matte finish is less slick. It takes a little practice to master the dual brightness mode but nothing 5 minutes of playing won't fix. It's a light weight and powerful little tool that in my opinion is worth it's weight in gold. The single 123 battery lasts longer than you would expect and it put out enough photons to stop most people in their tracks initially, which could definitely give you the edge in an unexpected contact with unfriendly people. Definitely the surefire product I get the most use out of, a daily carry item for sure.

I work in federal law enforcement and have several surefire products across multiple lines. My current EB1 Backup is my 3rd. One lost after 5 years of reliable use, another was stolen after 1 month. This latest iteration is almost as good as the original, it's a larger and the edging is a bit more squared. The flashlight is still cylindrical, however the changes in radius are not as smooth/gradual. Also it's a bit longer than the original so it doesn't fit as comfortably in a suit pocket. I keep it in the same pocket my keys are in and it's length and new shape force me to reach around it when I need my keys where asI hardly noticed the original.
The price though seems a bit steep. I paid $130 something for my first one, this one is well over $200. Still happy with it, but I prefer the original, in design and price. The clip on the new one is very strong after 6 months of frequent use and has yet to fall out of my pocket. All that said, it's still very bright and very reliable. I've had this one for 6 months and wholly recommend this product.

I use the EB1 Backup flashlight every day, all day long inspecting houses. I keep it clipped on my pocket and it is extremely bright and the battery lasts up to 2 weeks long. I will typically inspect 6 houses a day, shining my light on interior walls, in attics and in crawl spaces and basements. I have brighter lights, but the convenience of the small backup makes this my favorite tool for the job. Plus, I haven't had to use it for protection, but I'm pretty sure it would blind you if you were to try to attack me, giving me the advantage in hand to hand protection.

Regulation means the brightness that the light starts out at versus how bright it stays at the initial output over a time period. The problem is this light draws so much current that nice flat regulation is not possible. It gets dim extremely fast just like a cheap Chinese light would. Surefire really dropped the ball on this one. Please do better next time.

|Output / Runtime -- White Light|

|Low||5||.0||lumens / 40.0 hours*|
** Runtime (at highest setting for multiple-output
lights) until output drops below 50 lumens.
There are three EB1 Backup models to choose from, differing in the tailcap type/switch type combination:
Click-type switch with tailcap shroud — Partially press tailcap pushbutton for momentary-on high output; press further to click constant-on high. Return to off and press or click again within two seconds for low output. Raised shroud around switch provides extra protection against accidental activation.
Click-type switch without tailcap shroud — Like the original E1B Backup. Partially press tailcap pushbutton for momentary-on high output; press further to click constant-on high. Return to off and press or click again within two seconds for low output. No shroud around switch.
Tactical switch without shroud — Partially press tailcap pushbutton for momentary-on low output; press further for momentary-on high output. Release to turn light off. Twist tailcap clockwise for constant-on low then high output. No shroud around switch.
The brilliant 200-lumen high output beam is ideal for identifying threats and overwhelming the sight of adversaries. The 5-lumen low output is perfect for reading a map, checking an ID, or navigating in low light with minimal degradation to your dark-adapted vision. The Backup can run at this level for 40 hours, a valuable feature for outdoor or emergency situations. A tough, lightweight Mil-Spec hard-anodized aluminum body protects the EB1 Backup’s sophisticated electronics, and its smooth contours minimize clothing snag and pressure points. A two-way clip allows head-up or head-down carry. All EB1 models are available in Black, Silver, and Desert Tan.
