The Sun Within Your Grasp -- 500 Lumens

The title of my review couldn't be further from the truth--the E2D LED Defender Ultra is a shining portable orb that the competitors could only wish to ascribe to.

500 lumens at the highest setting and 5 lumens at the lowest setting is perfect for those instances where situational illumination is required.

For example, say that you are handling a small ware--a jewel perhaps, a metal post, or as an aside; you are out on a walk at night and you hear something on the trail and you wish to investigate--this is the lamp for you. The light is so bright that it will illuminate those tiny items and blanket a wide path for security. Say that you are writing a report within the confines of a space, and only a eensy amount of light (5 Lumens) is needed. Because of the low illumination you won't be a target.

The flashlight is light (only 4.2 ounces, with batteries), finely balanced, and the grip area as defined as the space between the knurled head unit and the knurled end cap-- this aspect is for those occasions, perhaps, where one might have to strike to defend oneself in hand-to-hand situations.

This is my second Surefire lamp. The 6PX Tactical doesn't hold water to this flashlight. I always seemed to drop my 6PX because of the lack of defined grip, I guess. Besides, the 6PX would not stand up on either side as the E2D LED Defender.

Caveat: the lamp section gets quite hot and will burn you when run at the highest (500 lumen) mode for more that a few minutes and consider the aluminum body is designed to dissipate the heat; therefore, the heat will travel the length (five and one half inches), of the barrel.

Also this lamp will go through batteries (123A) as if they were air when run at the highest mode for a substantial length of time.

Consider buying the spare battery carrier and the nylon holster (V91).

Finally, the only knock I have on this product is the (optional) holster. I like the holster for the nylon construction and the low profile, however, the clip catches onto the interior of the holster inhibiting a "quick draw". So have the light in hand for those tactical occasions.

Surefire E2D Defender

I am an ecologist in South Africa & work for a wildlife dept & hence a lot of time in the bush with the Big 5. I've had my Defender (200 Lumen) for a number of years & it's been fantastic. However, a few months ago it started behaving like a strobe light when on high power beam.
So, apart from a brief review of an older model this is a request for help/advice on what might be wrong with my Surefire & how do I correct it?
PS: would love the Defender Ultra but with the exchange rate it is unfortunately WAY out of my league! Thus the need to fix my model.

Perfect light, but very poorly designed clip and zero customer service

This is my second E2DLU (gave my first one to a friend a few days ago) and an addition to my collection of Surefire LED lights.

This is a truly amazing light that performs as advertised. It's well built, easy to use, durable and extremely powerful.

I live in France, so there are a few caveats for european Surefire buyers:

1. Surefire products are sold at a high premium here in Europe and, although I buy them directly from the Surefire distributor, prices can get as high as twice the US price.

2. The E2DLU has the worst designed clip of any flashlight I've owned, regardless of brand. The clip failed twice on my first E2DLU and it's not possible to get replacement clips outside the US. Surefire's local distributor can't get them and ther two times I broke mine, they replaced the whole light the first time and sent me a different (albeit better) clip from another model that they had to salvage from another new light. I spoke directly to Surefire in the US about the failing clip issue and I was promised spare clips repeatedly. After over 6 months of waiting for the clip to arrive, still nothing. It appears Surefire doesn't care at all about it's non-US clients.

Conclusion: great light, extremely bad customer service.

Over the road driver.. Hunter

I, like many Surefire customers, own several surefire lights... Had the first ed2 defender loved it.. The next one came out .. It went to 200 lumens; bought it.. Gave the first one to my dad.. Then along came the ultra 500 lumens got it and passed the 200 lumens to my mom... Bottom line over $500.00 in 3 lights .. Money well spent... Like all my other surefire lights 7 in all .. They are worth every penny... If you want a light that will work every time... Can and will blind a perp.. Lay his head open or put him on his knees with a hit on the arm, knee ect.. This is the light... My advise.. Everyone in your family needs one.. Wife , husband .. Son or daugther.. It will serve them and propect them in dark and there when the Boggie man shows up

MUST READ!!!!!!!!

I received my surefire illuminating tool last week. I immediately put it to work. The weather where I live has been -10 degrees and out of the mailbox it responded quickly. The name of this flashlight should be the "sun." 500 lumens is amazing. I was seen from 500 feet away in a snow storm. On the other side with 5 lumens I was virtually camouflaged from 50 feet. I have read other reviews and a few people have mentioned that there is a flowery reflection given off as a border from the tip design. If this bothers you don't buy this light. However, if you want a light that will save your life by illumination or even self defense I strongly recommend this product. I will be replacing all my firearm lights with surefire. I rarely find a product that receives all 5 stars, but I can't find anything negative to say. I have 2 areas I use my tool. One is in a hospital where obviously firearms are illegal. But I have the most confidence that this light will respond in an emergency blackout. I also have a small farm and use it to ward off varmints. I have yet to loose any brightness from the use of my light from battery failure. Good luck in your search for an awesome light, bur surefire is certainly at the top of my list. Thanks for the technology you strive for.
