Narc det

I bought and use the SF led defender ultra for my edc. My one and only complaint against this otherwise outstanding light is its pocket clip. I was going on a trip and packed my defender ultra utilizing the pocket clip to attach to a slot on my pack. While I was packing, my 13 month old son got ahold of the SF ultra and pulled it resulting in the pocket clip snapping. With the pocket clip gone there are not many options of carrying because the strike bezel will tear up any fabric it is laid against. Now I admit my 13 month old son is on the stronger side but there is no way a light designed for LE/military should fail in any way due to the actions of a 13 month old. Besides the clip, the light is high quality. Bright on high and the perfect amount of lumens on low.

Great Light

This is my second E2D Defender and is a favorite. It offers best of both worlds for up close work and at distance. I am proud to carry this light everyday and impressed with the quality. However, one drawback is the weak belt clip. Everything else is perfect and I will continue to carry only Surefire.

Amazing little light

This light, like many other Surefire owners, is not my first from them but it is top notch just like all the other. The brightness is excelent, responsiveness of the button is second to none and the fact that it has a low light mode is great for when you need a little bit of light and not something over powering.

I love the small compact design of the E2DLU-A, it's come a long way from my first E2D Defender that I purchased almost 13 years ago. This one has a way more rugged coating on it though as it has already seen some bump and drops onto pavement and other surfaces and shows no signs of scratches, dents or dings of any kind.

Like all my previous models it is definately worth the money.

Purchaser

It gets the job done that it was designed for. Customer service was very helpful. I am glad that I chose this unit instead of a different brand. You get what you pay for, this light was worth the price.

Bright, rock-solid light; clip needs improvement.

The E2D LED Defender Ultra is a handy, dependable, solidly built light. The head emits brilliant white light, slightly on the cool side of the spectrum. The beam is concentrated with an intense hot spot inside a diffuse but effective flood. The crenelated bezel is not razor sharp, but it will certainly tear through the fabric of normal jeans and khakis if worn in the rear pockets. If you wear Carhartts, this will take significantly longer to manifest.

The overall fit and finish of the light is excellent. The anodizing appears homogeneous and the knurling on the body provides sufficient traction with wet hands.

The biggest flaw, in my opinion, is the pocket clip. While the head-up/head-down clip is ingenious, the design and execution should be improved. The clip is not anodized to match the light and appears low-quality, but the true concern is that the clip is flimsy and doesn't allow the light to ride deep in the pocket. If using head-up carry, the entire head (>1.5 inches) sits exposed and the light can easily be grabbed by a passerby. When carrying head-down, about an inch of the tailcap sits exposed. The clip is loose and is prone to bending and deforming if snagged. I wish the clip would match the rest of the flashlight and would allow the light to ride more securely, like a well-designed knife.

Overall, it's a great light with blinding output. I live in Boston and I am unable to defend myself with anything more than a knife and light, but this will surely disrupt anyone's adapted night vision if employed from several yards away. On a dark night, the beam will positively illuminate and aid in identifying an animal at 100 yards without a problem.

I have no regrets about purchasing this light, but would like to see the pocket clip improved in future generations.

Awesome Light, minus the clip.

I've been buying and using Surefire products since I joined the Army in 2003. I own a few thousand dollars worth of Surefire lights. My pistols, riles, shot guns, and machine guns have all been adorned with Surefire products. I spent over a decade in the military & law enforcement. I've never had a single light fail. Ever. The new E2D LED Defender Ultra is no different. It is a NEAR perfect product. The light is blinding, yet subtle on the low/navigation setting. I work at night as a strip club and country club manager. I always use my E2D when closing the clubs. I search the building, vehicles left in the parking lot, and confront people "hanging" around. This is by far, the best pocket light I've ever used. My ONLY complaint is the pocket clip. It is possibly the worst design I've ever encountered. It broke after two months of use. This in comparison to my E2D Executive Defender which I had and used for over 5 years with no clip failure. I still use that light as a backup in my vehicle. I took the clip from a much older "E" model and replaced the broken one. Thankfully Surefire hasn't changed their machining much for their new lights, and the decade old pocket clip fit perfectly on my new "E" model.

The Sun Within Your Grasp -- 500 Lumens

The title of my review couldn't be further from the truth--the E2D LED Defender Ultra is a shining portable orb that the competitors could only wish to ascribe to.

500 lumens at the highest setting and 5 lumens at the lowest setting is perfect for those instances where situational illumination is required.

For example, say that you are handling a small ware--a jewel perhaps, a metal post, or as an aside; you are out on a walk at night and you hear something on the trail and you wish to investigate--this is the lamp for you. The light is so bright that it will illuminate those tiny items and blanket a wide path for security. Say that you are writing a report within the confines of a space, and only a eensy amount of light (5 Lumens) is needed. Because of the low illumination you won't be a target.

The flashlight is light (only 4.2 ounces, with batteries), finely balanced, and the grip area as defined as the space between the knurled head unit and the knurled end cap-- this aspect is for those occasions, perhaps, where one might have to strike to defend oneself in hand-to-hand situations.

This is my second Surefire lamp. The 6PX Tactical doesn't hold water to this flashlight. I always seemed to drop my 6PX because of the lack of defined grip, I guess. Besides, the 6PX would not stand up on either side as the E2D LED Defender.

Caveat: the lamp section gets quite hot and will burn you when run at the highest (500 lumen) mode for more that a few minutes and consider the aluminum body is designed to dissipate the heat; therefore, the heat will travel the length (five and one half inches), of the barrel.

Also this lamp will go through batteries (123A) as if they were air when run at the highest mode for a substantial length of time.

Consider buying the spare battery carrier and the nylon holster (V91).

Finally, the only knock I have on this product is the (optional) holster. I like the holster for the nylon construction and the low profile, however, the clip catches onto the interior of the holster inhibiting a "quick draw". So have the light in hand for those tactical occasions.

Surefire E2D Defender

I am an ecologist in South Africa & work for a wildlife dept & hence a lot of time in the bush with the Big 5. I've had my Defender (200 Lumen) for a number of years & it's been fantastic. However, a few months ago it started behaving like a strobe light when on high power beam.
So, apart from a brief review of an older model this is a request for help/advice on what might be wrong with my Surefire & how do I correct it?
PS: would love the Defender Ultra but with the exchange rate it is unfortunately WAY out of my league! Thus the need to fix my model.
